The phlebotomy program at Hennepin Technical College is a 58-hour in-person instruction oin which you will learn the following:

  • Phlebotomy equipment and procedures
  • Blood collection by venipuncture and capillary punctures
  • Basic anatomy as it relates to blood collection

  • Professional ethics and liability

Also, there is a 60-100 hours of clinical internship.

As part of this class, students agree to give and receive routine venipuncture and capillary punctures.

You will also be working with blood, blood products and other potentially infectious material.

The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate program at Saint Paul College is a combination of classroom, laboratory and applied experiences that will provide students with training needed for employment in phlebotomy careers. ​​​

You will learn the following:

  • Role and functions of the phlebotomist
  • Comprehensive skills to perform a variety of blood collection procedures
  • Standard safety practices designed to prevent injury or illness
  • Proper selection and use of phlebotomy equipment for safe specimen procurement that maintains optimal specimen integrity/quality
  • Specimen collection and handling errors that can compromise sample quality and how to avoid them
  • Skills to recognize and respond to complications or special considerations in blood collection procedures
  • Effective interpersonal/professional/self-management skills to fulfill job responsibilities in interactions with patients, colleagues and other members of the healthcare team

Following the on-campus phlebotomy coursework, you will be assigned to a clinical affiliate for the clinical experience.

You will spend 100 hours at the affiliate where you must perform a minimum of 100 successful blood collection procedures, under the supervision of affiliate staff.

You must be 18 years old to enroll to the phlebotomy program.
